5 E-Commerce Trends To Watch In 2025

Updated: Jan 2

The New Year brings both new challenges and opportunities. Understanding the nuances of the constantly evolving logistics market, building resilient operations, and choosing the right approach can be a make-or-break situation for any company, especially those involved in the booming e-commerce field. Here are five important e-commerce trends to watch in 2025 to stay ahead.

#1. AI Solutions Become a Must-Have

Merriam-Webster's 2024 Word of the Year is 'polarisation', however, we would strongly suggest considering 'Artificial Intelligence (AI)' instead – the technology everyone discussed in almost all sectors and will continue to discuss in 2025. And not without a reason! AI will help evolving supply chains from simple automation to completely autonomous systems. Supply chains generate vast amounts of data, therefore, AI-powered systems will optimise logistics, planning, procurement, and decision-making based on smart and predictive analytics. Integrating AI tools will allow businesses to take advantage of real-time insights, from spotting inefficiencies and optimising demand forecasts to improving inventory management and making their operations more agile and resilient. Companies which use AI tools will gain a competitive advantage from cost reduction to improved efficiency.

#2. Sustainability Gaining Its Place in Strategy

The topic of sustainability is nothing new, but its focus grows exponentially every year. That said, the logistics sector significantly impacts our planet's future. Therefore, action towards sustainable logistics must be taken sooner rather than later. Although there are challenges such as higher costs, complex networks and systems or even the lack of desire – that is not a reason for delaying reducing the supply chain's impact on the planet. As Forbes points out, "Keeping things going exactly as they are right now is unsustainable, but sustainability doesn't mean poor business performance. Many sustainability initiatives, in fact, are designed to increase efficiency and drive down cost".

The sustainability-first approach will soon be more than simply a compliance requirement – it will become an integral part of the strategy for many businesses. Companies focusing on reducing their carbon footprint, whether through adopting renewable energy or using recycled materials, will be prioritised by both the governments and the consumers. Sustainability is especially prevalent amongst Gen Z consumers and the generations after. Concerns are also shared by regulators, who increasingly demand the logistics and retail industry be held accountable for their environmental impact. The latter is widespread in Japan, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, while the US is likely to follow.

#3. Risk Management More Important Than Ever

The disruptions caused by recent global events – from international conflicts or economic instability to port strikes in the US and Canada – revealed the sensitive sides of the supply chain. 2025 might bring new challenges, such as existing and potentially new conflicts and wars, ongoing negotiations with the port workers, rising prices of raw materials, or new tariffs that Donald Trump's administration might impose after he's sworn in as the US President in January. With that in mind, e-commerce companies will focus more on risk management: diversifying their supply chains, exploring alternative suppliers and transportation methods, and working more with shipping partners such as KATA Global Logistics to navigate through the changing commerce landscape

#4. Subscription Commerce is Here to Stay

According to a report by Subscribed Institute, the subscription economy has grown by 435% in nine years (between 2012 and 2021) and is on target to reach a projected market size of $1.5 trillion by 2025. Among retail goods, groceries are the leading subscription category among consumers worldwide, with 41% of globally surveyed consumers revealing they are signed up to receive it regularly. 38% of consumers subscribe to receive personal care products, 34% – to household products, 32% – to clothing, and 26% of consumers get toys, games, books or pet products based on this e-commerce model. According to a survey, the average consumer spends around $133 monthly on subscriptions, including digital and physical products and services. Additionally, businesses offering a subscription-based model build strong customer loyalty. One thing is clear: the subscription-based model is here to stay and will continue to grow in 2025.

#5. Focus on Nearshoring & Last-Mile Delivery

The supply chain of e-commerce is often a very complex system involving numerous entities working together to achieve a successful delivery. In 2025, e-commerce businesses will focus more on building faster and more agile operations while navigating through new tariffs, legislation and regulations, integrating technology, and reducing their impact on climate change. Adopting AI and data technology will likely help solve the last-mile delivery challenge due to improved forecasting and capacity utilisation of delivery vehicles. Meanwhile, nearshoring tactics – bringing production closer to key markets – might become a key to providing better resilience and sustainability. Nearshoring will likely complement operations, enabling businesses to improve response times and mitigate geopolitical risks while maintaining a healthy balance between cost and speed.
